Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport.
We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking
space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.
My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the
hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so ... Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

It is going to happen again. And when it does we just went all in on the same failed system, i.e., "too big to fail". Nothing said at all about Fannie and Freddie. General Petraeus is heading out to rescue yet another counterinsurgency effort in trouble. Give credit to President Obama for acting decisively by relieving General McChrystal and immediately picking the best possible replacement, not letting a dangerous vacuum develop.

If there is one general who can step quickly into the top job in Afghanistan, it is Petraeus, who has been closely involved in formulating the campaign plan along with McChrystal. And if there is one general who knows how to handle the media and the political process (skills that McChrystal obviously lacked), it is Petraeus. That doesn't mean that he is a "political general"—that dreaded epithet applied by combat soldiers to those who get ahead by playing office politics rather than by proving their worth on the battlefield. Petraeus has proven himself at every level of command, on the battlefield and off. His courage cannot be doubted. Neither can his skill. Already in Iraq, he has pulled off the greatest turnaround in American military history since Matthew Ridgway took over the 8th Army in 1950 during the dark days of the Korean War. Now he has to do it again in Afghanistan. Don't bet against him.

I recently went home to visit my mother in Chicago. I could not help but go to the simulcast room at Hawthorne race track, about 2 miles from Midway airport where my friends picked me up. God forgive me but I find these dives irresistible. The collection of degenerate broken down horse players who have nothing left in life but their next $2 is staggering. The jetsom and flotsom of life's hard knocks is stacked tall and deep. And I am in the middle of it, betting the card at Churchill Downs. These are my people. From the top left: 1) My brother (Whom I had not seen for some time. I knew I could find him at the track). 2) Marshall Gramm my degenerate horse race gambling buddy who asked me if he could borrow money for his stake that day, and also wanted to know who I had in the 5th at Woodbine. 3) A sharp dude who had his racing form in one hand and his wheel chair control in the other. He was decked out to the nines with hat and white shoes. 4) An old horse player who had three forms open in front of him from three different tracks looking at them through a magnifying glass mumbling to himself.

I ask the ghost of the horse players' future, is this a sign of what "must be" or a sign of what "may be"?

The Blackhawks are up 2-1. Just two games away from The CUP! It has been a lifelong dream.

It is bucket list item # 11. When I lived in Chicago I would go to 30 Blackhawk games a year and spend spring break following them to Philadelphia and New York to watch them on the road. If the Hawks were to win the Stanley Cup that would be scary as that would mean I could move one step closer to kicking the bucket.
