Allan Meltzer on inflation...time to sit up and pay attention.

Is inflation on the horizon? Maybe. But when Allan Meltzer says it is, better wipe off your glasses and look real hard. You can't wait for it to show up in the CPI and then do something about it then. And any belief in the exploitability of the Phillips curve is a Faustian bargain.

If you are worried about inflation you should be. And what should keep you awake nights is wondering whether the Fed has the political will to increase interest rates when the recovery is less than complete (whatever that means). Given how they have compromised their independence lately, tell those sheep you are counting hello for me.

Allan Meltzer to George Schultz...

I'm currently reading a book entitled "The Road Ahead for the Fed". George Schultz writes an introductory piece. He says that Allan Meltzer communicated to him in a phone conversation that in looking out into the future and past our current difficulties "It's a race between the inflation rate, the tax rate and (price) controls, and all three are going to win."

OHHHHHH Nooooooo! Say it ain't so Professor!!!!!

Is inflation coming? Three short pieces from Allan Meltzer you should read.

From our good friends at the American Enterprise Institute....If you look at the political history of the Fed and the political pressure they will face to not tighten when the economy begins to recover, it does not look good for the future price level and its rate of change. Let's hope the Fed officials who claim they will increase the fed funds rate with the same "alacrity" they reduced it are as tough as they talk when the time comes.

Robert Mugabe and Zimbabwe

This is no joke. This is a 100 trillion Zimbabwe dollar note. Last year they had an inflation rate over 79 billion percent.

If you are concerned about future inflation, you really need to read this.

Great stuff from Robert Hall. The theory and art of making monetary policy continues to evolve before our very eyes.
