It appears there are similarities between the 30's and this down turn. However, doesn't all of the technology advances in every way of our day to day lives lessen the severity of modern economic down turns on standard of living? Farms yield more per acre, computers exist, and many forms of transportation to move goods throughout the world.

I see little change in human behavior as the restaurants and watering holes in Raleigh seem to be packed.
